RESEARCH  IN PROGRESS

Basic Science Research

Hemorrhagic Shock decreases Alanine Absorption in the Rat Jejunum.

Calcium Channel Blockers  correct  this Absorptive  Defect.

Septic Shock decrease absorption of AminoAcids in the Rat Jejunum.

This is not corrected by Calcium Channel Blockers

ANIMAL  MODEL

Experimental Model for Shock has been developed in the adult rat. Single pass perfusion technique is used to measure net alanine absorption and water transport in an isolated jejunal segment. Systemic Blood Pressure, Heart Rate and Mesenteric blood flow are measured. Hemorrhagic Shock is induced by bleeding the rat down to 60% of its blood volume for one hour. Resuscitation with blood and saline restores the baseline values. Septic shock is induced by injecting the rat with lipopolysaccharide. Saline solution is infused to restore the circulation of the animal
